AG wants Palmiste Park to be QP Savannah of South

Speaking at Ramleela celebrations at the Park on Sunday night, Ramlogan expressed amazement that spectators had to spread tarpaulins, sheets and other articles of clothing on the ground, which had been transformed into a muddy slush following heavy torrential rainfall during the day.

“We from South Trinidad still have to continue to do with inadequate facilities and as I stood there and saw children and mothers jostling for space to sit in the mud, and as I saw young children and mothers spreading bed sheets, tents, tarpaulin and curtains on the ground, to make do, to catch a glimpse of the spectacle of Ramleela, I made myself a silent promise.

“And it is this, I will take a plan to Dr Roodal Moonilal, Minister of Housing and the Environment and I will take a plan to Cabinet to ensure that Palmiste Park is to south what Queen’s Park Savannah is to north Trinidad,” Ramlogan also said. “I would want to see that this park is developed, the pond next door is heart shaped, that pond we should dredge it, we should put fish in it and we should make right around it areas for picnic spots and bar-b-que pits,” Ramlogan said.

“We should convert this park into a proper open-air theatre, with proper seating accommodation and we should encourage better family life. I want to see Christmas re-enacted away from the commercial stage. Christmas should be re-enacted here in Palmiste Park. I want to see Emancipation re-enacted here in Palmiste Park, I want to see the Camboulay riots re-enacted.

Ramlogan also reiterated that a one-hundred acre plot had been identified, in close proximity to the Debe market, where a south campus of the University of the West Indies would be constructed.

“Already you would have seen the winds of change that have led to a change in administration, many of you would have heard the announcement to bring the University of the West Indies south of Trinidad and Tobago,” Ramlogan said.

“A one hundred acre plot has been identified close to the market in Debe, and we will be building a University of the West Indies campus in South Trinidad to be housed and located in Debe.

That plan has already been approved by government and it is a decision of the government so that many of you who incurred the additional cost of accommodation for your children to get a tertiary education at the university will now be able to have them remain at home and pursue their degree option,” he added.
