Chung, Lingo cop mixed doubles

This Open has seen many upsets and new champions emerge in various divisions throughout the competition. It has proved to be a great blend of inspiring tennis and continuous development coming from our local players. The mixed doubles final featured men’s third seed Richard Chung partnering with last year’s women’s singles champion Lee Ann Lingo, when they faced the combination of Marlon Weekes and Sarah Salandy.

Chung/ Lingo wasted no time and took full control, winning 6-1. The seeded duo were determined to cop the title and slammed their way to victory with a comfortable 6-2 second set win over Weekes/ Salandy.

Lingo sought to make up for this year’s women’s singles final loss against Breanna Stampfli when she partnered with Goreti Dos Santos, in the women’s doubles final, against Christine Alcazar/ Cindy Kabli.

Dos Santos/ Lingo were unstoppable in their first set winning 6-1, but the Alcazar/ Kabli combination rebounded in the second to win, 6-3. The deciding third set saw Dos Santos/ Lingo emerge the victors and cop the mixed doubles title with a 6-2 win.

Second seed Athelstan Phillips stunned number one seed Michael Cooper in the keenly contested senior veteran’s singles final. Phillips proved his worth for the championship and took the opening set 6-4. His consistent play in the second set saw him beat Cooper 6-1 to claim the singles title.

The men’s single plate final featured Marlon Weekes against David Ramsumair. Weekes was assertive in the first set winning 4-1. His second set performance was flawless and comfortably took the men’s plate final trophy with a 4-0 win, over Ramsumair.
