TT boxers shine against Guyana
The national boxers used their fight against Guyanese opposition as preparation for the Olympic Boxing Qualifiers later this year.
Emerging victorious were Carlos Suarez, Andrew Fermin, Michael Alexander and Aaron Prince.
The only local boxer to go lose was Imran Khan against Shakeel Garcia.
In their respective matches, Suarez defeated Kevin Allicock (49kg bout), Alexander beat Stefan Govia (56kg), Prince won against Laured Stewart (69kg) and Fermin got the better of Mackember Pierre (81kg).
Special adviser to the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board, Boxu Potts who has been working closely with the Olympic qualifier team was pleased with the results.
“We are doing things differently in anticipation for different results. We have raised the bar with our training methods. We’ve introduced mental, physical, spiritual and technical training and the camp is responding well to their new techniques. We’ve changed the athletes’ diet in order to take care of the rigorous training they have to endure. In order to have a great output one must have a similar intake. You are what you eat and our nutritionist has done an excellent job putting together a special diet for the team,” Potts explained.
The Boxing Board special adviser was also pleased to have the involvement of some regional coaches.
The TT boxers will continue their preparation against other foreign opposition to ensure they are prepared for the Olympic Qualifiers.
“We next face Santo Domingo in two weeks and Puerto Rico within two weeks thereafter. Eddy Suarez, a young Cuban coach has been working alongside our local coaches, namely Anthony Waterman, Reynold Cox, Rolston Dopwell and Winston Cox. Our other upcoming box-offs are schedule to take place in Arima, Mayaro, Siparia and Point Fortin,” continued Potts.
