Wrightson Rd must be renamed Ranjit Kumar Rd

Who was Ranjit Kumar and why were so many people there including politicians? Ranjit Kumar was the one who was responsible for the building of what we all know as Wrightson Road, one of the most travelled thoroughfares in Trinidad. This was built on swamp land and today has not sunk and has withstood the wear and tear of all types of vehicles.

He also was the one involved in the Hilton Hotel of which we are all proud, yet all that is called after him is a street in St James, how many citizens even know where that is?

This is our 50th year of Independence yet we still hold on to colonial names of people who never did anything for the country or its development.

Wrightson may have been the city engineer but what did he really do for the island? While I am on the topic of honouring our own and not colonials who never did anything for the island or even visited the island, how about those streets from Robert Street down to McDonald in Woodbrook?

Wrightson Road must be renamed after Ranjit Kumar. This would make us all proud, there are lots of precedents all over the world where names have been changed to honour people of importance, and this year of our 50th year of Independence is the time for name changes to show that we are truly Independent.

I am not advocating throwing the baby out with the bath water as there are some babies we should keep.
