‘Halimah’ helps children learn
It was launched in memory of 11-year-old Halimah Aishah Mohammed, of Sinanan Gardens, Santa Cruz, who died from pneumonia on January 15. Halimah Helping Hands was launched in the child’s memory at a function held at Centre Pointe Mall auditorium, Chaguanas. Young Halimah was hailed at the function as a child who, despite her young age, displayed extraordinary concern for underprivileged children.
Even at her young age, Halimah assisted children in the community where she lived and at various homes for children with their school work.
Helping Hands, in a release signed by the organisation’s public relations officer Ruqayyah Hosein, will seek donations from the public, as well as engage in fund-raising events to provide resources to underprivileged children in memory of Halimah. Proceeds, the release stated, will be used by members of Halimah Helping Hands to purchase educational materials for children who are less fortunate.
Speaking with Newsday about the foundation, Halimah’s mother, Haajra Mohammed, said the foundation’s target group is underprivileged children who reside at various homes throughout the country. Mohammed said, “We have begun to visit homes where we have asked the management, to select children who are in dire need of assistance. It could be counselling, assistance in their school work etc. Halimah Helping Hands will provide the resources to assist children. If there are children in a community, we assess their need and provide the resources, be it counsell
ing or assisting with learning disabilities.”
The foundation is a non-profit making organisation and at the launch attended by scores of people, its objectives and aims were outlined.
