Melville goes to court for ‘Soca Warriors’
Through attorney-at-law Egon Embrack, Melville issued a twopage notice to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TT FA) on July 25 again informing them of his intention to register the name with the Association for use.
The statement also requested that the “TT FA be allowed to register the name and then recognise Melville financially and in the form of acknowledgment of his role.” However, to date, there has been no response from the local football fraternity and Melville is now weighing his legal options to proceed.
An upset Melville said yesterday that this ongoing saga has been long overdue, and simply wants recognition for his work toward the branding of the national football team.
He said the football heads promised to deal with the matter, “but it seems they are playing games.” According to Melville, the official website of the US Trademark and Patent Office shows that the TT FA had previously launched a request to patent the “Soca Warriors” brand since 2014.
He expressed belief that the TT FA has now placed his matter on the backburner while they run off to the US Trademark Office to secure ownership rights of his patriotic phrase.
