TEN STEPS TO ZEN
The basis for creating a Zen environment (in Japan it means a place of meditation is minimalism. A clutter free, organised environment with clean lines and simple detail defines the style. Here are some steps to get your Zen space.
Keep the furniture to a minimum and simple without ornamentation. Furniture should be made from organic unfinished materials like wood, cork and natural fibres to bring you closer to nature. The arrangement of the furniture is directly related to the function of the space. The furniture should be arranged to have clear circulation paths which also helps with the tranquillity of the space.
The colour palette is earthy natural colours, brown, grey, white and beige using the softer chromatic values. These colours help to connect you with nature and creates a sense of calm. Colour contrast in this colour scheme is subtle. Choose two or three colours for your space and have one colour be the anchor for the scheme.
The material for the floor is important because this gives a direct connection to the earth. Wooden floors offer a sense of solid footing. Carpet made from natural materials like wool, pure cotton or jute gives a textural reference of refuge and relief. The colour of the flooring should be light. A dark floor will create too much contrast.
Fabrics for furnishings and window treatments should be made from natural fabrics, light in colour and the textures should convey moods of well-being.
The quality of the artificial light has to be controlled in a Zen environment. Lighting fixtures should be dimmable because lower light levels tends to calm the senses. Have at least three layers of soft light from lamps, cove lighting and wall sconces to create a glow and not have a harsh light coming from one source. Candle light is always an option. Of course natural light is best in the daytime.
Infuse the space with scents from essential oils which can either be used to rejuvenate or calm as the different fragrances evoke different feelings. Scented candles and potpourri also stimulate the senses.
In creating your Zen space, decoration and ornamentation are simplified or eliminated altogether. If you must hang photographs and paintings, there should only be a few that are simply displayed. Zen ornaments are water features, bamboo, stones and plants. These too should be simple and minimal.
Remove electronic devices because they work against the concept of Zen. Having them in the space will create a distraction and erode the harmony. Phones, televisions, computers are not allowed in this space.
Declutter. Stow away items that are not being used. Keep the floor and surface areas clean and clear of clutter.
Create symmetry as this creates balance which will increase serenity.
