Grateful not in TT vocabulary

But this is TT where freeness is supposed to be measured in the millions. There are no more grateful people. We are living in the era of “big money” and gifts of taxpayers’ dollars must be measured in the height and size of each recipient.

Some citizens (including the unions and the sitting Opposition) are giving the impression that taxpayers always owe them a “little something”. Rumble, rumble, huff, puff and grumble and blow the Government’s house down has become the order of the day.

The police always want more, more, more and crime detection is poor, poor, poor. Public servants who should be courteous to members of the public but are seldom ever, always want more.

The price of oil went up a few dollars a barrel recently and suddenly the Government is rich enough or stupid enough to still be giving out free personal laptops like chilli bibi.

The past administration, had it handled governance equitably, would still be in place. So many unbelievable allegations of pocket lining are surfacing; readers are left literally breathless.

So, what are we left with? Among other scandals contracts, signed in the dying last days of an allegedly self-serving government, must be recalibrated using smaller amounts of available money.

And the citizens begging do not seem to understand that “more” is a four-letter word that is constrained by the words: from and where, when, and how. And never forget that “soon” is the quintessential other dirty word that has to be considered.

I urge citizens to wake up in the morning, open up the papers, and if their name is not published in the obituary pages, be grateful, because they are having one fine day.
