UWI St Augustine campus a no thoroughfare zone

“Members of the general public who routinely use campus roads as a thoroughfare are advised to use alternative routes, and to note new regulations for vehicular access to the campus,” a UWI release issued on Friday said. Only vehicles displaying valid UWI permits will be granted access to the campus through the north and south gates.

Vehicles which do not display the requisite permits will be classified as “unauthorised” and will be required to use the visitor’s gate.

The visitor’s gate is accessible along St Augustine Circular Road (east of the campus obliquely opposite Milner Hall).

Visitors include suppliers and persons doing business on campus such as at Republic Bank, TTPOST, UWI Bookshop, among others, and staff and students without permits.

In implementing the new measures, which is a partnership between the campus security services and the police service, Campus Registrar, Richard Saunders said that every effort was made to minimise the impact on the public, while ensuring the safety of the campus.

Noting that it was necessary to implement greater controls to regulate persons and traffic on the campus grounds, he said, “The conversion of the campus into a no thoroughfare zone is meant to significantly reduce the possibility of unauthorised individuals on our campus.” He asked the university community and stakeholders to cooperate with the directions from the campus security, the police and traffic management authorities as they seek to ensure a safer and secure campus for all.
