Destroy drug dens near UWI

The plea is for John Public to come forward with whatever information in the quest to identify and apprehend criminals.

Well, here I am.

I live on Circular Road, Monte Grande, Tunapuna, very close to the University of the West Indies. Just recently four men were shot on O’Keefe Street with one eventually dying.

Two weeks prior to that, at Lovell Street, which is parallel to O’Keffe Street, another murder was committed. On both these streets there are drug blocks (any links?).

How we can allow drug blocks to proliferate within metres of UWI, the seat of higher learning — the academic centre of TT — is beyond my comprehension.

I, like several other students renting and living in the neighbourhood, walk to and from classes day and night hoping and praying, as we pass these two streets, that we would not become victims.

It is possible that with the increased workload (as a result of the spiralling crime rate) on the staff of the Tunapuna Police Station, they may have overlooked the existence of these blocks.

Now that it is being made public I am sure the sergeant at the station would ensure that these drug dens that are well known to all residents in the area would be disbanded and completely destroyed.

In the interest of protecting, nurturing and moulding the young minds of our nation, in the interest of destroying the negatives and promoting and encouraging the positives I look forward to the officers moving swiftly to remove these festering sores that are just metres from the gates of UWI. If those in authority are really serious, let them act now.

KA PADILLA Tunapuna
