High crime rate due to illiteracy
The high percentage of crime today is because of illiteracy. There are too many illiterates in our land. In 1995, statistics revealed they were 66,000 people who can neither read nor write. Another 122,000 are unable to read or write well. And these figures in spite of more schools being built, more teachers being trained, and education being “free” from primary to tertiary. What can we do? Our church leaders must come out and march with our people demanding crime stops. Our Judiciary must give our magistrates and judges more powers to enforce their sentences on these bandits.
Only recently a man was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for cutting a woman’s throat. The judge should have imposed a flogging. Let him feel the same pain as his victim.
Our police force is doing a good job despite the senior ranks not supporting the junior workers. They too will need our prayers.
Let us all rally around Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley giving him our full support.
