Hart’s bio is ‘Fit for a King’

This was revealed by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley last Wednesday evening at the VIP Lounge, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain

The occasion was the launch of Fit for a King, the biography of Edward George Phillip Hart one of the founders of the Eddie Hart League in September 1967

The book was written by Hart’s son, Terrence Hart

Speaking directly to Hart the Prime Minister said: “Although I am reluctant to encourage government participation where private sector could do it, I think this is the year for Government to join you. We owe you a debt of gratitude, you have contributed way beyond what you had set out to do. In recognition of the best that the community has produced with little resources after 50 years, you will not last forever but the league should last for another 50.” With his eyes focused on Darryl Smith the Prime Minister said: “In this difficult period where money is hard to come by I want to ask the Sports Minister to find a few dollars to help Eddie Hart celebrate his 50th anniversary.” In his remarks at the launch the Dr Rowley spoke about his long-standing friendship with Hart whom he called a “very nice person with a serious demeanour and a great sense of humour”

Prime Minister Rowley said in this era of cell phones, lap tops and iPads, books are coming back in fashion (having launched his own last week, From Mason Hall to White Hall)

“Books are important, reading is very important and Eddie’s life represents the best of Trinidad and Tobago,” Dr Rowley said

In his feature address Errol Pilgrim said it was very rare to find in TT a politician who is equally loved respected and cherished by people on both sides of the political divide

Fit for a King goes far beyond the political incarnation of Eddie Hart

Its emphasis is that of portraying a man of very humble birth and modest upbringing who, with some loyal friends around him was able to transform an almost impossible vision into an institution that is now approaching its 50th year of existence, the Eddie Hart League for Football

With his feet firmly planted on the ground, Hart has been ever conscious of the need to respond to the many inner-community challenges with which we are all quite familiar

His mission over the past 50 years would be based on his understanding that the young people of this country are its most precious resource

And it is that understanding that has informed everything that the Eddie Hart League has attempted and accomplished, including its survival
