‘Sprang’ fingered as gunman in 2006 murder
Cummings is before is before Justice Carla Brown-Antoine in the Second Criminal Court where it is alleged that he shot and killed Ramnath at Beetham Gardens.
According to the State’s case, on May 9, 2006, 23-year-old Ramnath was outside Pensioners’ Quarters in the Beetham Gardens, when he was confronted and shot by a gunman, who later ran off.
Testifying in the Second Criminal Court, Ramnath’s uncle Tony Ramnath, said he was at Pensioners’ Quarters playing a game of dice with two others, while his nephew was also present looking on.Ramnath testified that he saw Cummings with a gun in his hand, and while holding his nephew by the waist, placed the weapon to the back of the younger man’s head and fired one shot.
Also testifying yesterday was Ramnath’s mother, Shanta Samlalsingh, who said she was told by her brother-in-law Tony that her son had been shot sometime after she left Deolal’s home and went to her husband’s house.
Samlalsingh, who had difficulty reading from a statement which she allegedly gave police since she was yet to replace her reading glasses, claimed she could not recall saying some of what was attributed to her in the statement.
Sgt David Hunt, of the Portof- Spain Criminal Investigations Department, testified to arresting Cummings, almost two years later at Dan Kelly, Laventille, in February, 2008.
He said after being told of the murder investigation and being cautioned, Cummings remained silent.
Cummings is represented by attorney Larry Williams while Nigel pilgrim and Giselle Ferguson- Heller are prosecuting. The trial continues today.
