Tears over body of man found in Valencia

After his body was identified yesterday, mother could not contain her grief while she was being escorted out of the building by one of her sons.

“They killed my son!” she cried.

“He never hurt anybody! He never killed anybody!” Newsday understands Durity, of Oropouche Road, Valencia, had been missing since September 17.

Relatives explained that he was last seen the day before as he went to a birthday party for one of his brothers.

The next day he called his sister, Jinelle Durity, to ask for directions to a location in Cumuto where he was supposed to meet a man to collect pigs. Jinelle explained that he did not bother to go but when they called his phone later that day, the calls went straight to voice mail.

Worried relatives made a missing persons’ report two days later on September 19. Exactly one week later, Valencia police officers called the family to inform them that the body of a man fitting his description was discovered.

Relatives said his face was unrecognisable as decomposition had already reached an advanced stage.

They, however, positively identified him through tattoos of his son which were placed on his neck and his chest. Relatives described Durity as a friendly, non-confrontational person.

“He was never a bad person. He would never hurt a fly,” said Jinelle to reporters yesterday. “He would probably give you a little talk and so on but he was never a bad person.

He would not even leave Valencia to go out and lime.” An autopsy is expected to be performed today to determine a cause of death.
