Sando fire victims still await self-help grant

According to reports, at 7.15pm, a fire if unknown origin, completely demolished four closely constructed houses at King’s Wharf, rendering approximately 17 persons homeless.

Fire appliances from the Mon Repos Fire Station responded but were unable to save any of the houses.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Springvale/ Paradise councillor, Naigum Joseph, said residents had received grants from the Ministry of Community Development to purchase appliances and other household items while children who had lost their school items had them replaced.

He said the San Fernando City Corporation had also cleaned up the area in preparation of the rebuilding process while a social workers from the San Fernando West MP’s office was working on the housing grant.

He said most of the residents were staying vat relatives and friends until they could rebuild their homes.
