TT Chamber VP questions delay of the MVA
He said the authority was to have involved the ability to renew licences online; the introduction of the points system for motorists who break traffic laws, all of which he said would not have been possible to provide without a technology platform. However, he said there was technology which was crucial and important and there was also leadership.
Hinds made the comments at the launch of the chamber’s newest initiative, the ICT Pro TT Committee which was held at the auditorium of the House of Angostura, Laventille. He said the audience included many people who were in leadership positions in the public or private sectors and even a Permanent Secretary representing the public sector.
He said whatever their positions, they ought to see themselves as leaders and change agents and see their potential. Hinds urged members of the ICT Pro TT Committee to have a focused drive to attract more individuals and businesses like themselves to become members of “something which we can make more vibrant.” He added that the chamber liked to boast that it was 135 years old but cautioned that if the business body intended to last another 135 years it couldn’t do that without members focused on the new world that was ahead which meant it needed to add to its membership a whole new cadre of vibrant, active, energised young people. He said it was a sad indictment on “leadership” that the Motor Vehicle Authority promised the facility of renewing licenses online, something which should already have been a reality rather than a dream.
Derrick Villeneuve, chairman of the committee, said its vision was to help transform this country into a digital society and that could be achieved by continuously improving national information and communication technology (ICT) capability and engaging in a partnership with people, business and government to help to develop the knowledge and integration of the ICT professional community.
He said it was also important to grow the knowledge of the specialist ICT community and work with the chamber’s membership and government to bring about changes in policies, laws and strategies and to develop the country’s ICT infrastructure so that eventually ICT services would be available to everyone.
