49 speeding drivers caught

Using speed guns, police officers issued tickets to all 49 drivers, one of whom was Wesley Maxwell, 35, of Pleasantville for speeding, driving without a driver’s permit and a third charge of there being no insurance by virtue of the fact that Maxwell did not have a permit.

Maxwell pleaded guilty to the charges and Magistrate Lisa Singh-Phillip fined him $1,000 for the offence of speeding.

Court prosecutor Sgt Kasieram Lutchman said the defendant exceeded the limit by 15 kilometers per hour.

The legal limit is 80 kilometers per hour.

Magistrate Singh-Phillip fined Maxwell $1,500 for driving without a permit and $2,500, for not having an insurance. The magistrate also disqualified Maxwell from obtaining and holding a permit for the next three years.

The charge against him arose from a speed-trap set up by police officers of the Special Highway Patrol, between 9 am and noon on Sunday. The exercise was spearheaded by Ag Inspector Jaikeran, Police Constable Shiva Roopchand who charged Maxwell; Corporal Arnold Ramroop
