Prison officer to stand trial
Kevin Brathwaite, a prison officer, 39, of Simeon Road, Petit Valley, was before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar in the Port-of-Spain Eighth Magistrates’ Court.
Seven witnesses were called by special prosecutor Lee Merry during the preliminary inquiry, after which the Chief Magistrate ruled that a prima facie case on the charge of causing death by dangerous driving under Section 71 of the Motor Vehicles Act had been made out. She committed Brathwaite to stand trial at the next Assizes.
Grant was knocked down while riding his bike along the Audrey Jeffers Highway on March 29, 2004. The 42-yearold was then rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he passed away.
Grant was a specialist sprinter who started cycling in 1987 with Corkie’s Casuals. A multiple national champion and a member of several national cycling teams in the 1990s and early 2000s, he switched his focus to coaching after his retirement from competitive cycling.
Grant was also the head coach of the Bike Smith Cycling Club based in Arima.
