Fourth intended victim escapes rape ordeal

Swift response from the police resulted in the arrest of the man in his early 30s who police have now linked to three previous rapes which took place in the back of MovieTowne, Port-of- Spain between August and September of this year.

The last victim was a Belmont woman who boarded a taxi and asked to be taken to MovieTowne where she worked.

The suspect who was also a passenger in the vehicle followed the woman to the MovieTowne compound and abducted her and took her to the back of the compound where he ordered her to bathe and then proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her.

Following the rape act the woman was then made to bathe again in the sea and then released.

The two other victims also suffered a similar fate at the hands of the serial rapist who is in his early 30s and who pretends to be a jeweller.

According to reports, all three victims gave a similar description to the police of the same man nabbed at the Movie Towne compound on Friday night.

According to reports, a 22-yearold woman was at the MovieTowne compound when she was approached by the serial rapist who began making advances to her and promised her jewellery and gainful employment.

However, during the woman’s conversation with the man, he asked her to take a walk with him so that they could view the ambience of the sea located at the back of Movie Towne.

The woman became suspicious and reported the matter to the Western Police.

Officers responded promptly and the man was nabbed.

Police sources told Newsday that the rapist may be responsible for other rapes throughout the country and yesterday he was expected to be placed on identification parade. All three victims were expected to attend the ID parade in a bid to point out the suspect. Police told Newsday the rapist is usually armed with a knife and targets victims who appear to be seeking out friendship with someone due to stress or depression.At least two of the victims claimed to have been in a state of depression and were at MovieTowne hoping to relieve some stress when they were abducted by the man and taken to the back of Movie Towne where they were raped.

Police are also calling on other victims of rape to visit the Western Division so that the suspect can be viewed during other ID parades. Yesterday, head of the Western Division SNR Superintendent Basdeo Ramdhanie confirmed the arrest of the suspect and said efforts were being made to have him placed on an identification parade. Senior Sup Ramdhanie advised persons attending outdoor events or even going to the movies by themselves to exercise the necessary precautions when being approached by strangers.
