But one year later, the anniversary of his death passed unnoticed by the nation. Relatives at both Carenage and Moruga, held separate memorial services for Smith on Sunday.

Smith, a labourer, lived at Herrera Trace, Penal Rock Road, Moruga, and also at stayed Carenage. “Sunday marked one year since Brian died and we held a small prayer service in Moruga where residents gathered to remember him,” said his father, Joseph ‘Joey’ George. “We are not hearing anything from anyone in authority.

No one is telling the family anything and we are continuing to seek answers.” On November 22, 2015, two days after Smith went missing at sea, his body was found in the waters near Alice Point in Chaguaramas.

Forensic pathologist Dr Eslyn McDonald-Burris performed an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, which concluded that Smith had drowned. A second, private autopsy by Dr Hughvon des Vignes determined that Smith’s body bore several visible signs of violence including a cracked skull and a broken jaw.

News of the death was followed by Carenage residents and Smith’s maternal relatives staging fiery protests last year. They insisted that Smith had an altercation with a group of Defence Force soldiers during which he was struck with a shovel in his stomach.
