3 murders on election day
In the first incident, a 27-year-old man and his mother were wounded during a drive-by shooting at Jitman Drive, Arouca shortly before 3 pm. According to reports, Renrick Gomez, who was recently detained in a police exercise, was washing a car outside his home at about 2.45 pm when a vehicle pulled up and the driver shot him.
Gomez’ mother, standing close-by, also received gun-shot injuries.
The two were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope where they underwent emergency surgery yesterday.
Renrick, police said last night, succumbed to his injuries at hospital.
Snr Supt McDonald Jacob and a team of officers from the Northern Division were quickly on the scene and spent shells were recovered.
A search was carried out for the suspect to no avail.
Then at 4.30 pm, Junior Sanderson Lewis, 28, was sitting on an empty beer box at Dass Trace in Enterprise, Chaguanas when a gold-coloured car pulled alongside him and two occupants inside, shot him several times before speeding off.Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. Police sources said the victim was wellknown to them. There were reports of attempts by residents to block the road in protest, after Lewis’ slaying, but police quickly restored law and order.
Then at half past eight last night, police were called to Picton Road, Laventille following reports of rapid gunfire. Officers later found a truck in which, the body of an unidentified man was found riddled with bullets.
Autopsies are expected to be done today on the bodies of Renrick Gomez and Lewis at the Forensic Science Centre in St James. When the third shooting victim is formally identified an autopsy will be done.
Investigations are continuing.
