Paul starts journey to Tokyo 2020

Paul, who entered the Rio Olympics in August with only 15 months experience as a boxer, was eliminated after one match.

However, the Enterprise resident has already began his 2020 preparation as he was one of many athletes participating at the three-day High Performance Workshop hosted by BPTT /Michael Johnson Performance and the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTO C).

Johnson, a former 200-metre and 400m world record holder is in TT talking to coaches and athletes concerning their needs on advancing their sport forward.

Speaking about the workshop Paul said, “the experience this morning (yesterday) to me was a very informative event especially for the athletes.

The questions that were raised and was answered here today was very helpful for me and I know for most of the athletes here, so I believe it was successful in that sense. I am looking forward to more things like this to improve and help the athletes in the future.” Paul knows he competed in Rio as an inexperienced athlete.

“To me starting off the new Olympic season like this is very important for someone like me being kind of thrown into the Olympic experience from the get go.

Having the four years to prepare for the next Olympics and starting over in this way (is great).

A lot of questions I had, a lot of advice which was given to us I believe was really important for someone like me and even the (other) athletes moving forward for the next Olympics.” Paul said making his debut at the Olympics this year has given him the hunger to return to the Olympics. “For me it has awakened my hunger to go back out there and perform at my best.

Like I said questions were asked today, advice was given, appreciated and accepted and I just can’t wait to go back and move forward with the information and knowledge that I have now concerning competition.” The other TT Olympians who attended the workshop yesterday at the TTO C House on Abercromby Street, Port of Spain were Reyare Thomas, Mikel Thomas and Janiel Bellille.
