Rambachan says UNC will support FATCA

“The UNC has never said that it is not going to support FATCA legislation,” Rambachan said.

“Far from it. What the UNC has been asking for is a properly constituted Joint Select Committee which would be able to get expert persons to provide the best advice on what is a financial matter and to which there are no experts in the Parliament,” Rambachan said.

He added: “Our position has been very consistent and very, very clear __ we are going to support the legislation provided we get the opportunity to bring both Houses of Parliament into a joint select committee and deal with the matter there.” Rambachan said the ruling PNM administration has resorted to calling Opposition parliamentarians derogatory names and not having a sense of patriotism regarding the Bill.

“It is very unfortunate the attempt that is being made by the PNM to paint the United National Congress as some unpatriotic group of persons but our patriotism is demonstrated by the position we are taking in respect to legislation that infringes upon the constitutional rights of people,” he said.
