Air Guard dies, driver flees
The driver fled the scene and is yet to report the accident to the Siparia Police Station.
Guevara, 38, of Bennet Village, Los Bajos, Santa Flora was on his way home when the accident occurred at about 5.10 am.
Guevara was the only passenger in an orange B13 car which was proceeding south along the SS Erin Road.
On reaching Quarry Village in Siparia, the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a WASA main line. Guevara appeared to have been asleep in the front passenger seat and sustained fatal injuries on impact.
Siparia police say an anonymous caller reported the accident and told them the driver fled, leaving Guevara in the wreckage.
Guevara’s wife, Debra Vargas-Guevara said she last spoke to him at 6.30 pm on Friday.
“We are in an allfours club where we play every weekend and he insisted I accompany him but I was tired having been in Port-of-Spain for the entire day,” Vargas- Guevara said yesterday.
She told Guevara, her husband of fours years, to go without her. At about 5 am she woke up and became concerned when she did not see him at her side. While looking out for him she got a call from the police about the accident.
Vargas-Guevara said she held a birthday party for her husband on Los Iros beach on Good Friday (April 14) when he turned 38.
“He had a great time dancing and having fun with friends,” she said, lamenting she did not know the week would be the last days of his life. She said was a happy man.
Guevara was the father of five, and the stepfather of four. His sons Christon, Chrisean and Christiano lived with him and his wife, while his younger children, Che and Chelsea, live with their mother in San Fernando.
Christon, 12, the eldest child, said he felt empty inside.
“He took good care of us, I still cannot believe this news about him being dead,” Christon said.
