Chess Centre launched in Point Fortin

She was speaking to teachers, parents and children at the launch of the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Foundation — Chess Centre, which took place at the Point Fortin Borough Auditorium on April 22 .

Fitzpatrick recounted her experiences with the sport to a very attentive audience, sharing how chess prepared her for life’s challenges and allowed her to travel and gather experience outside of Trinidad and Tobago .

The TTCF’s new Chess Centre follows on the heels of last year’s very successful 16-week “Chessin- Schools” project which was held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Point Fortin .

According to the Chess Centre’s coordinators, TTCF directors, Raymond Aaron and Dr Jo-Anne Sewlal, the initiative came about as a result of demands made by participants in last year’s Chessin- Schools project for chess to become a permanent fixture in the Borough of Point Fortin .

The TTCF’s Chess Centre will be based at the Conference Room at the South-West Regional Indoor Sport Arena, Coronation Park, Egypt Village, Point Fortin .

An eight-week programme, running from 10 am to noon, has been designed and will commence in the second week of each term .

Among the officials at the launch were TTCF president Edison Raphael, Point Fortin Mayor Abdon Mason, Major Michael Celestine (who spoke on behalf of Point Fortin Member of Parliament and Security Minister Edmund Dillon), and Patrice Charles, Director of Physical Education and Sport at the Ministry of Sport .

Registration for the new term has started with training commencing on May 13 .

Additionally teachers, parents and students who are willing to volunteer to be trained as chess coaches can now participate in a dedicated training programme which is being concurrently conducted .
