$4.3M renovation for Women’s Hospital
While some of the work has been done in staff areas, visitors and patients to the facility would notice the new flooring in the updated reception area on the ground floor.
Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh, was asked about the project during the minister’s Mother’s Day visit to MHWH; he was there to meet the sole woman to have given birth that morning. The minister said, “This was a facelift that was instituted after a visit I made here about a year ago, where I found the facilities were not conducive, especially to our internal customer; staff, (who) have to be on-call 24 hours a day.
(We) didn’t have proper staff facilities yet we expect our staff to perform.” “So one of the things we did,” Deyalsingh added, “was to make sure our staff is comfortable and (now) we are totally re-doing the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department. So we are upgrading the facilities to focus on our two main customers - staff and patients.” Reporters also spoke to Acting Chief Executive Officer of the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA), Davlin Thomas, about what he described as a “complete refurbishment.” He said MHWH’s “entire pharmacy,” medical records area and the waiting area on the eastern side will all be completed soon. “In addition to that, after the minister’s visit a year ago, we had an in-house intervention that is now going to improve the Emergency Department (which) was less than the minister’s expectations.” “In fact, we found a way to improve it exponentially.
So what we’ll have is a first world waiting area soon. It started about a month and a half ago - we’re moving the A&E department eastward, so that the entire area eastward; from this (reception) room, will become a part of A&E Emergency, with an entrance here. We should be finished at the end of the month (May),” Thomas stated.
