Barbados whip UWI in Red Stripe

ST JOHN’S: An unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 70 between captain Courtney Browne and Floyd Reifer helped spur Barbados to a comfortable seven-wicket win over the University XI in their Zone B Red Stripe Bowl match at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) yesterday. In a rain-affected match, Browne hit a hurricane unbeaten 50 off just 26 balls while Reifer supported with 24 not out to lift Barbados to 176 for three off 26.2 overs, a revised target under the Duckworth/Lewis system after rain curtailed the University XI’s innings at 116 for one off 31.3 overs. Captain Browne came to crease with his side at 106 for three, and needing to score more than six runs per over, he proceeded to smash the University’s attack apart. He blasted four sixes and two fours in his knock while Reifer played the supporting role.

Earlier, opener Sherwin Campbell hit 48 with seven fours as he and Dale Richards (31) shared an opening stand of 83. But when Campbell went at 100 for two and Ryan Hinds followed six runs later for 11, Barbados were in spot of bother at 106 for three. And if the University captain Philo Wallace, had not failed to hold catches offered by Reifer (twice) and Campbell, the outcome could have been different. Browne made sure there was no cause for alarm. Left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham, who removed Campbell and Richards, ended with two for 19 off six overs, but his other bowlers were expensive. In the University XI’s innings, Wallace struck 39 before he was dismissed in the 13th over at 55 for one. Jason Haynes 33 not out and Jason Parris with an unbeaten 35 saw their team to 116 for one when the rains poured down at about 11.30 am. Play did not resume until 3:15 pm when Barbados were set their revised target which they duly accomplished.
