Bandit shot dead after robbing cop
A bandit who robbed a police officer yesterday died at hospital last night after being shot by police officers who were on patrol at the time of the incident. According to police reports, at around 1.30 pm yesterday, Ag Inspector Mervyn Phillips was on his way to Republic Bank, San Juan, to make a deposit when a bandit grabbed his bag and ran off. The senior police officer ran after the bandit who escaped in a waiting vehicle. However, Phillips summoned the assistance of officers attached to Highway Patrol, who followed the getaway vehicle. Police officers ordered the vehicle to stop, and when the bandits refused to comply police opened fire on the vehicle, shooting the bandit in the head. The injured man was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he died during surgery. Insp Phillips was unharmed during the incident.
