San Juan Sports take Sunshine crown with record performance

San Juan Sports defeated Ramsingh Savi by 128 runs to capture the 2003 Sunshine Frosted Flakes/NSL windball cricket title at the Grand Slam Park in Marabella on Saturday.

San Juan, batting first created a NSL record by smashing 20 sixes in their innings of 214 for nine wickets in 25 overs. Leading the way was Dexter Samuel who counted 46 inclusive of five towering sixes. Ramsingh Savi could reply with only 86 as San Juan ran away winners and $10,000 richer. In the women’s final, Rebirth of Port-of-Spain continued their dominance of female cricket with a 25-run win over Scorchers of Point Fortin. Batting first Rebirth made only 63 all out but their bowlers turned out in full force to restrict Scorchers to 38/9 in reply.

President of the Nationwide Sports League (NSL), Lincoln Persad speaking to Newsday after the match said :”We had a truly excellent men’s final and it showed just how much entertainment the NSL brings to sports lovers. Imagine coming to a match and seeing 20 sixes fly in all directions. “I must say congratulations to San Juan Sports who are really an excellent cricket team. At the same time, I must congratulate Rebirth who has been the flagbearer as far as women’s windball cricket is concerned in this country.”
