Mangroo pedals away with South grind

Stephen Mungroo pedalled his way to victory on Sunday in the 40-mile road grind in San Fernando.

The Guyana-born who is now a Trinidad and Tobago naturalised citizen hit the finish line ahead of second placed Roger Smart. In third was Joshua Alexander. The event was organised by the tireless Anthony Commisiong whose Sport and Culture Promotions staged the event with support from sponsors Ramasir’s Auto Supplies and Repair; Capital Insurance; Dickie’s Bar; and Singh’s Electrical Supplies. Commissiong said yesterday he was pleased with the overall response of the cyclists to the event which was staged around San Fernando. “Everyone was pleased with the outcome. The cyclists had a very competitive race and we are thankful for the sponsors who assisted,” said Commissiong.

The race served as a warm-up for the gruelling Tour of Guyana next Sunday. Peter Hernandez took the top spot among the veterans (50 and over) ahead of Lloyd Joseph and Joey Nunes in second and third respectively. The South Cycling Association supervised the race which begun on Cipero Street, proceeded along Sutton Street, Independence Avenue to the Rienzi Kirton Highway, and back to the finish line in front of Ramasir’s Auto Parts on Cipero Street.
