Pacers win close in national b-ball
UNIT TRUST Maloney Pacers fit into a tight space to emerge 64-63 victors over Detour Shak Attack at the Maloney Indoor Sport Facility as action in the National Basketball Champion-ships continued. The teams fought out a close game throughout Wednesday evening with Shak Attack leading 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Pacers took over to lead 40-35 at the half time interval, but the scores were knotted up 50-50 entering the final period. Pacers, the undisputed champs of the Eastern Community Basketball League showed their mettle as they struggled on bravely to hold off Shak Attack for the one point win. Miguel Williams with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Derrick Boxill 13 points and five rebounds and “Player of the Game” Junior Harper with 15 points and eight rebounds led the Pacers’ charge.
Shak Attack were led by Virgil Fraser with 11 points, two assists and five rebounds and Raynold Hospedales 10 points and five rebounds. Courts Horizon led by Chezelle Griffith who scored 13 points and ripped down 12 rebounds beat Brian Chase Academy 52-47 in the women’s game. Horizon trailed 11-9 at the end of the first period but stepped up a gear to lead 26-20 at the half- time interval and were never behind again, taking a 39-33 lead into the final stanza. Jamie Jack had a game high 15 points one and Nikisha Cropper added 11 points and six rebounds to the Academy’s score. Games in the championships continue tomorrow when Edinburgh 500 Hawks meet North Zone champs National Flour Mills (NFM) at the Central Regional Indoor Sport Facility, Unit Trust Maloney Pacers play Tobagonians Alpha Engineering Star Seekers in a women game, and Top Shotters host Detour Shak Attack at Shaw Park, Tobago, in men action.
