TT jockeys win in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN: Trinidadian jockeys Rajpaul Rajkumar and Faizul Razack were among the winners in Barbados horse racing at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday. Rajkumar won the seventh race and Razack captured the ninth and final event on an afternoon 2002 “Horse of the Year” Talkabout-lucky landed the card’s main event, the Bar $15,000 (US$7,500) Val Gale Cup.

In the seventh race, Rajkumar steered the colt Cat Attack to a one and a half length victory. Cat Attack, who placed third in the Barbados Derby in August, beat March Blues and Busha, and covered the 1,570-metre run in one minute 42 and 2/5ths of a second. Razack pushed Coral Princess to a two-length victory in the ninth race, topping Bewitched. Barbados-based Jamaican jockey Richard Lunan also won on the programme, capturing the fifth race aboard Long Bay over Jamaica-bred Privy Council under Jamaican jockey Ricardo Hibbert, last year’s champion jockey in Barbados. Leacock had little trouble in steering Talkabout-lucky to victory in the Val Gale Cup over 1,800 metres. The five-year-old mare raced at the back of the field early and accelerated going into the turn to take command and win by six lengths in one minute 55 seconds. The victory completed a double for Leacock to overtake Andy Trotman in the jockeys’ championship standings with four days left in the season. Leacock moved up to 20 wins, one ahead of Trotman, who had one winner — Jamaica-bred Snooky Lou in the second race for Jamaican trainer Andrew Nunez.
