Sir Everton gets UWI doctorate
BRIDGETOWN: The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws will be conferred on former West Indies batting legend Sir Everton Weekes, the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill have announced.
The UWI Cave Hill conferred the honour on Sir Everton during the second of two graduation ceremonies to be held at the Wildey Gymnasium. Sir Everton is the first of the celebrated West Indies triumvirate, commonly known as the Three Ws, which also includes Sir Clyde Walcott and the late Sir Frank Worrell. A native of Barbados, Sir Everton holds one of the most enduring records in the history of Test cricket, having scored five consecutive centuries in a Test series. He played in 48 Tests gathering 4,455 runs at an average of 58.61. Sir Everton was awarded the Commander of the British Empire insignia in 1960, the Gold Crown of Merit insignia in 1992, and the Knight Commander of St George in 1995 for public service and an outstanding career as a sportsman.
