Nationals, Rangers advance in North Zone

LEAGUE toppers St Francois Nationals and runners-up Superstar Rangers made winning starts to this year’s Premier Division Big Six series in the Northern Football Association.

Ex-Strike Squad midfielder/striker Marlon Morris paved the way for St Francois in a 3-0 shut out of Riverpool on Saturday, while Robert Durham and Don Morris added the other goals. And Superstar Rangers whipped Harvard 2-0 on goals by Kwesi Peterson and Jason Charles. Fire Service were also among the winners with a 3-2 triumph over Xcel Oriental, with Kevon Long scoring a double and Hayden Brathwaite the other goal.  Dexter Salandy and Paul Alexander scored for the losing team. St Francois also advanced to the quarter-finals of the Superstar Cup with a default win over SKHY. But Rangers doused Fire Service 3-0 with Stephon Morris, Jason Charles and Colin Roberts each scoring one goal. Defence Force edged Xcel Oriental 3-2 following goals by Dwight Dowdy, Kestohn George and Alvaughn Donald.  Shurland Awai and Anderson McDavid got goals for Oriental.

Paragon, one of the old firm teams in the league advanced with a 2-1 victory over La Famille. Nyron Villafana and Antonio Alleyne netted for the Caribana Boys, while Omari Paul got the lone goal for La Famille. But another old NFA club Malvern have to replay their match with Maraval Youth Academy after a 2-2 draw. Jabari Samuel and Anthony Gardner scored for the Woodbrook Glamour Boys, while Dustin Felician and Christian Augustine got goals for Maraval. Queen’s Park dumped Maple, popularly known as “The Government” out of the series 5-0, with Scott Rodriguez getting a double as did Akil Alcindore, while Jason Lindsay scored to pile on the agony. In the quarter-finals of the Superstar Cup, Cocorite United or Riverpool play Malvern or Maraval at School Ground today from 4 pm.
