Malick b-ballers eye future
Despite a disappointing run in the revamped National Basketball Championship season so far, Malick Tigers are undaunted.
They are confident going into their encounter with Tobago’s Courts Hillbouncers at the St Paul’s Street Sports Gymnasium, Port-of-Spain today. The 12-member women’s team which features past students of Malick Senior Comprehensive in their lineup have two points from their first two matches. The closest they came to winning was a one-point loss to the Police women’s outfit. With the odds stacked against his unit, Tiger’s coach Floyd Sergeant has revealed that they will be pursuing a win as there is still hope of a berth in the second round of competition. This is if Police lose to leaders Defence Force. Currently in third place in their group, Malick have been been plagued by personnel shortages, and are playing without a centre and a point guard. They also show a lack of preparedness.
Playing with a young squad, with an average age of 20, Sergeant said this year’s competition has been a learning experience, one which they plan to build on in view of better performances in the next season. Tigers will take the court at 4 pm against Hillbouncers in the first match of a double-header which will also feature Seattle of Tobago playing Cap de Ville of Point Fortin. Marabella based PSAEL Raptors are the first team to advance to the second round with seven points from four matches and a 10-point difference over second placed Unit Trust Maloney Pacers who are also on seven points. Following are the National Basketball Championships standings to November 2.
