Alloy Lequay a ‘sporting missionary’
FORMER Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Alloy Lequay has now taken on the role of a “sporting missionary.” He made this revelation during his feature address at the Home Construction Limited (HCL) Trincity Cricket League awards ceremony at Orange Grove, Tacarigua, on Saturday night.
According to Lequay: “As I take my leave from a leadership role in the cricket arena, I am contemplating the role of a ‘sporting missionary’ embracing every opportunity presented to me, as this one, to preach the message of the triumph of hope over despair. “The theme of my message of hope is materialism versus culture. “The desire for wealth and riches create a passion of greed which is the breeding ground for corruption, the genesis of criminal activity. Match fixing and doping in sport have one objective — greed.” Lequay who served as president of the TTCB for 25 years stepped down at the end of October to make way for first vice-president Ellis Lewis to take over leadership, but has kept the chief executive officer (CEO) post.
Lequay challenged the cricket clubs in the Trincity league to be a dynamic group of concerned individuals, adding worth and value to their community. He urged them to go out there and discover the potential of the young people and direct them to undertake activities which would enrich their lives. Lequay also lashed out at the media saying, during the recent TTCB elections they exercised an abuse of power sheltered behind the fundamental rights of freedom of the press and freedom of speech, which citizens respect. During the build-up to the elections, Lequay was heavily criticised by a section of the media who was in support of presidential candidate Deryck Murray. Lequay had openly supported Lewis who fell into his plans of successorship.
