Cindy is new Miss La Reine Rive

CINDY Gill of North West Laventille is Miss La Reine Rive 2003.  Gill beat out a field of 14 other contestants last Saturday evening at the Queen’s Park Savannah PoS to take home the coveted title. The Honourable Prime Minister Patrick Manning crowned the new queen.  He was accompanied on stage by Minister of Community Development and Gender Affairs Senator Joan Yuille Williams. Gill won quite a number of prizes for her outstanding evening gown, which was indeed a very unique piece of work.  Depicting our national currency, the top of Gill’s gown was the replica of a dollar bill making its way down into a sea of coins, which saturated the lower half of the gown. Her jewelry was also representative of coin pieces, but it was Gill’s hairstyle that stood out most as she wore dollar bills tucked in various positions in her hair to complete the winning design.

First runner-up Petal Dowlat of Sando Cultural Ambassadors also managed to stir up the crowd.  Dowlat’s handling of her question in the interview segment came in for rave reviews and uncontrollable applause from the audience.  She also copped the prize for “Best Costume.” In the Folk Theatre Category, it was hats off to the Malick Folk Performing Company who emerged the overall winners.  The Cocorite Ujamaa Folk Performers were in second only half of a point behind the winners. The third spot saw a tie between Sangre Grande Civic Centre Combined and Point Fortin Juenes Agape. There were a number of outstanding performances that evening including the Belle dance by Picton Folk Performing Company, “Rhythms of Best Village” and “Folk Medleys” by Prizgar Lands / Kelly Village Combined and Drumology “Music for the People” by North West Laventille Cultural Movement. Guest artistes also did their share of entertaining, with the most overwhelming crowd responses for Adesh Samaroo, Singing Sandra and Black Stalin all backed by Roy Cape All Stars.  Baron also came in for an encore performance.
