UWI to develop better cricket pitches
BARBADOS: The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus, Barbados is moving to develop top-class cricket pitches in time for the ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007. The campus recently established a Sports Agronomy Research Unit (SARU) and is now advertising for a Research Fellow. The appointee is expected to have at least a PhD degree in a relative discipline with responsibility for carrying out research on improving grass surfaces used for sports in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
This is all part of a thrust to develop and improve the fields and pitches throughout the Caribbean in time for the cricket world’s major event. The West Indies Cricket Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Roger Brathwaite, said that the project is a collaborative effort with the WICB, as it aims to raise the standards of the grounds around the region between now and 2007.
