WI women cricketers seek recognition

THE West Indies Women Cricket Federation wants greater recognition for women cricketers in the region. In its drive to popularise the game and make it more attractive for players and potential sponsors, the WIWCF formed a new public relations committee in St Lucia. This committee was delegated to formulate policies and plans to promote their activities and to market the game regionally and internationally. Carol Whilby-Maxwell president of the WIWCF noted that the Public Relations Committee was commissioned by the Executive to ensure that the Caribbean region and people in the Diaspora are better informed of the work of the organisation. Keith Joseph public relations officer of the WIWCF heads the newly established Public Relations Committee.

And the new Committee members have already started on their mission to transform the image and accomplishments of women cricketers in the region. They set the parameters for an aggressive promotional and sponsorship plan for the organisation. Among some of the major plans recommended by the committee were the unveiling of the WIWCF’s logo and brand identity. They also decided the establishment of the Federation’s web-site and the identification and promotion of its core values. Joseph disclosed that they identified a number of important objectives for the organisation. Among them is the creation of packages for sponsors of the WIWCF and the involvement of leading Caribbean personalities in special television and radio clips promoting the sport of women’s cricket. Other members of the Public Relations Committee are Nadica McIntyre, Tino Geddes, Vaneisa Baksh (journalist); and Donna Symmonds (cricket commentator). They also decided to produce and publish a book related to the “History of Women’s Cricket in the Caribbean.”
