Three golds for TT on day two of Junior CAC

Walcott, competing in the Boys Under-20 Javelin event, won the gold medal with the distance on just his first throw, hurling the javelin 67.01m. Mexico’s David Ocampo Bravo was second with an effort of 63.44m while Puerto Rico’s Kenny Mendez de Jesus placed third 59.04m.

Ashlee Smith was a disappointing fifth in the Girls Under-20 Shot Put with a throw of 12.11m.

TT’s success in the field events continued with Elton Walcott leaping to the podium with an impressive performance in the Boys Under-20 Triple Jump.

Walcott had a 15.42m effort on his second attempt which was good enough to secure first place. Mexico’s Alberto Alvarez (15.21m) and Honduras’ Jasson Castro (14.87m) were second and third respectively. TT’s Seon Stafford was fourth with 14.73m jump.

Machel Cedenio claimed the silver in the Boys Under-17 400m dash, crossing the finish line just behind Jamaican’s William Lennox. The Jamaican won the gold in 47.94 while Cedenio had to settle for second in 48.12. TT’s Theon Lewis was a distant sixth in 49.98

In the girls equivalent, Domonique Williams crossed the finish line in fifth place in a time of 57.44. Bahamas Shaunae Miller took the gold in 53.39 seconds.

The TT duo of Sparkle Mc Knight and Alena Brooks failed to shine in the Girls Under-20 400m final, placing out of medal contention. Mc Knight finished fifth in 54.80 while Brooks was seventh in a time of 56.40. Deon Lendore walked a way with the bronze in the Boys Under- 20 quarter-mile event, stopping the clock at 47.16. Compatriot Kishon Dempster was seventh in 48.60.

There were no medals for TT in the Boys Under-17 Discus event despite the presence of two local athletes. Shervorne Worrell was fourth with an effort of 40.44m while Kenejah Williams placed sixth, well short of medal contention with a throw of 38.61m.

The CAC Junior Championships continue today with TT’s Moriba Morain in the Boys Under-20 200m event. Morain, who won the 100m and 200m finals at the National Championships last week, was disqualified from the 100m for false-starting on Friday but will get a second and final chance at an individual medal in the 200m.

The national Boys Under-20 relay team sped to gold in a CAC Junior 4x100m record time to beat the highly fancied Jamaicans. The TT boys which included Jamol James, Moriba Morain, Sabian Cox and Shermund Allsop clocked an amazing 39.77 seconds to pip the Jamaicans who timed 40.07 while Dominican Republic was third in 40.36.

TT’s 4x100m Boys Under-17 relay team of Ayodele Taffe, John-Mark Constantine, Breon Mullings and Jereem Richards took the bronze medal in 41.98 seconds. The Jamaicans continued their domination of the meet with gold in 40.88 while Bahamas was second in 41.72.

There was another bronze for TT in the 4x100m relays with the Girls Under-20 quartet of Breanna Gomes, Kai Selvon, T’Keyah Dumoy and Gabriela Cumberbatch placing third in a time of 45.55. Jamaica, unsurprisingly was first, crossing the finish line in 45.03 while Bahamas was second in 45.54.
