Omar Khan to manage Carib Beer cricket team

PowerGen’s Corporate Communi-cations Manager, Omar Khan has been named manager of the Trinidad and Tobago senior cricket team for the 2004 Carib Beer Regional series.

This was disclosed by a source close to the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) yesterday. Khan was in charge of the team for this year’s Carib Beer series, as well as the Red Stripe Bowl limited overs tournament in October. The source said Khan received positive reviews from the players who were under his wings for the two tournaments and his selection was an automatic choice. “Khan has been very good in the position of manager of the Trinidad and Tobago team and the players are very happy with him,” the source said.

When contacted yesterday Khan said it will be an honour to manage the team once again. “I have given my services to cricket because I think that I can really make a meaningful contribution. I have so far enjoyed my stint as manager of the Trinidad and Tobago team and I am looking forward to the series next year. “I am happy to work with the youngsters and help them build their character. I try to give them advice on developing a well-rounded personality and once this is achieved their cricket will improve,” Khan said.

The qualified engineer rose to prominence in cricketing circles after he took the PowerGen team from the minor leagues to the national championship. He then showed tremendous interest in the development of young cricketers and was instrumental in his company PowerGen — sponsoring the Secondary Schools Cricket League, as well as the PowerGen Youth Coaching Programme.

Khan has taken a special interest in the national players and was a pillar of support for Dave Mohammed during his recent court trial in Grenada. The spinner, who was called last week to the West Indies team in  South Africa publicly thanked Khan for all he had done for him. The national team go after their first regional First Class title since 1985 on January 9.
