Carvings and paintings by the Baneys
Readers who would like to see more of the late Vera Baney’s works, her etchings, paintings, and above all her ceramics must visit 101, An Art Gallery at the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago’s Headquarters in Federation Park between 10 am and 4 pm Tuesday to Friday or Saturday 10 am to 2 pm before the exhibition closes.
Of the works photographed the day after the exhibition opened with a Private View last Tuesday, Ralph Baney’s abstract watercolour “Energy from the Sun” appears to be out of focus - but is not, that being the intention of the artist playing around with watercolours. The sun beats down as the seas, the land, the creatures quiver and dance in the heat haze.
“Passion” is a simple, exquisite, elegant statuette by Ralph Baney, no more need be said of it.
Ralph Baney’s pastel “Abstract Reclining Nude” of strong, bright colours and clearly defined outlines makes a startling contrast to the watercolour, “Energy of the Sun”.
“Tree of Life Hanging Platter” is the work of the late Vera Baney that also needs no comment being straightforward with clean, clear lines.
“Fluttering Bird” is an example of the latest “in the rough” style of woodcarving by Ralph Baney that could well be described as an abstract, were it not for the suggestion of outspread wings and tail reminding one of the upside down courtship display of the yellow tail, the blue-eyed Oropendula.
“Vortex” is a sensuous abstract one would like to caress, it invites one to stroke the smooth polished surface.
Finally, just a reminder that this exhibition of ceramics, paintings, woodcarvings and sculpture by the renowned artists Ralph and his late wife Vera Baney, currently showing at 101 An Art Gallery, Federation Park, closes next Thursday.
