Jamaat owes Govt $25M
THE Jamaat-al-Muslimeen now owes the Government $25 million in compensation arising out of damages to State property in the 1990 attempted coup. The High Court had awarded the State $15 million plus interest, which had amounted to 12 percent per day. Attorney General John Jeremie yesterday in the House of Representatives, said in a written response to a question that as of the end of November this year, the sum owed to Government was $24.8 million. He said the only effort made so far by the Government to recover the money was to have the judgment registered with the court, so that the court could determine the assets of the members. He noted that the Jamaat matter was a unique case since it involved investigating the assets of 114 members.
