Bmobile, Sony Ericsson bring android to TT

Android is a mobile operating system that uses a modified version of the Linux kernel. It was initially developed by Android Inc, a firm later purchased by Google

Its an open, integrated software which can be used in any price bracket — from the most expensive to the cheapest handset.

Last week, TSTT introduced the new system at Carlton Savannah Hotel, Cascade side by side with its latest handset on the market, Xperia by Sony Ericsson.

Director, key accounts for Sony Ericsson Gustavo de Gracia welcomed the first android-based phone to the local market.

“It combines the best entertainment features and social media,” he said.

The Xperia comes in three sizes — the X10, the X10 mini and the X10 pro. The X10 is the size of the iPhone and like its competitor, it has a touch screen to access all applications. The X10 pro, its “mini me,” uses the slide key pad to access the necessary commands. The android phones work on an existing GSM network.

“The real power of this is how it harnesses the power of the Internet,” said executive vice president of mobile services Lisa Agard. “These handsets with the ability for instantaneous internet communications, document handling, entertainment and video recording, has made the practical user ten times more productive as far as what could be accomplished in an hour when a person does not have constraints as to when and where they can exchange communications.”

According to the Dow Jones Newswire which cited research by ComScore, that android smartphone market share was the third highest in the USA behind RIM and Iphone.

The report, published in August said the Android was the only brand among the top five smartphone systems that recorded a growth in market share.

A majority of major handset manufacturers worldwide have added android-based devices to their portfolios and the operating system is even being deployed in a new line of Tablet PC’s. The open architecture of Android systems is a major contributor to the estimated 70,000-plus applications that have been developed for it. More applications encourage greater usage which in turn fuels even greater application development.
