National footballer’s car stolen

NATIONAL footballer Ancil Elcock took a chance and ended up losing his $1/4 million motorcar. According to a report on Monday last Elcock parked his Hyundai Coupe outside Corky’s bar on Southern Main Road, Curepe, with the engine running and a friend sitting in it. As Elcock entered the bar, his friend also followed him only to hear the sound of a car driving away and looked back in time to see the vehicle disappearing southwards. An all-points-bulletin was sent and the car was recovered next morning burnt on the Solomon Hochoy Highway. Constable Che DeSilva is investigating. In an unrelated matter, at around 4.30 pm on Monday, Gewan Singh was about to open the gate of his  Scott Street, Curepe home when he was accosted by a gun-wielding bandit.

The man ordered Singh inside where he was tied up, while the house was ransacked. Gewan managed to free himself and alerted a neighbour to look out for a strange person coming from the house. The neighbour took note of the intruder and followed him into a maxi-taxi while keeping in contact with the police. The maxi-taxi was eventually stopped in Champ Fleurs and the suspect searched. Police recovered a number of items reportedly stolen from Singh’s home. Jene Richardson, 18, of Foya Street, La Brea later appeared before Tunapuna Court Magistrate Debra Connors charged with house breaking and  robbery with violence. Richardson was not called on to plead. The matter was adjourned to January 5. In another unrelated matter on Monday, Wendell Petit of Ragoo Trace, St Augustine was walking along the Priority Bus Route around 2.30 pm when he was accosted at gun point by a man.

The man took his gold ring valued $2,000 and $3 in cash. At the time, Port-of-Spain CID detective David Hunte was in the area when he saw the commotion. The detective responded and apprehended the bandit but not before his windshield was smashed as the man tried to avoid arrest. A man identified as Kevin Chanders, 33,  of no fixed place of abode, later appeared before Tunapuna Magistrate Debra Connors charged with robbery with aggravation and malicious damage. He was not called on to plead. Bail was refused, and the matter was adjourned to January 5, 2004. Cpl Albert Groomes laid the charges on both Chanders and Richardson.
