2 men released after beating boy, 12
TWO SUSPECTS held in connection with beating a 12-year-old boy with a piece of wood were released from custody by police yesterday. The two men — a 78-year-old pensioner, and his 40-year-old son — spent Sunday night at the Fyzabad Police Station while the young victim was warded at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH). But as police carried out further investigations, the decision was made to release the suspects.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Gowers Well Road, where the victim, Ganesh Gangadath, lives with the pensioner. Police reports indicate that the boy was accosted by the two men who accused the boy of stealing. Gangadath, neighbours told police, had his feet tied with a shoe lace while the two men gave him a “licking” with the piece of wood, striking him on his chest, stomach, back and hands. However, police were informed that the pensioner had taken in the boy since infancy. The boy, relatives told police, was troublesome and would often get into mischief. The boy remains warded in stable condition at hospital. Fyzabad Police are still investigating.
