Fisherman’s body found in canefield

THE BODY of a Cedros fisherman was yesterday found hog-tied and dumped in a Princes Town canefield, the victim of a drug deal gone sour, police said. Police suspect Ramesh Lalchan, 37, of Fullerton Village, Icacos, was linked to the $2.5 million marijuana bust by Point Fortin police last month. Lalchan’s body was discovered in an isolated canefield off Fairfield Road around 8.30 am by a villager passing  on a bicycle. The deceased was found lying face down in the muddy track, with a hole at the back of his head. His mouth had been gagged with a red bandana. On his left arm were the tattoos “Darleen” and “Dread.”

Investigators were unsure how Lalchan, also known as “Lover,” was murdered, suspecting that he had been shot, or beaten to death on his head. police believe Lalchan met his death on Tuesday and his killers drove into the Princes Town canefield to dump the body on Tuesday. Several feet from where the body was discovered, police retrieved Lalchan’s car insurance, cell phone bill, bank receipts, bank book and other documents that had been discarded in the bushes. There were also several call cards and envelopes which bore addresses in the United States. With the assistance of the Cedros police, investigators sought the help of Lalchan’s sister, Sharon, and brother, Ramjit, to assist them in enquiries. After viewing by the District Medical Officer, the body was taken to the San Fernando Mortuary, where it will be lodged until Friday. The body will then be taken to the Forensic Science Centre. Visiting the scene yesterday were officers from the Princes Town CID, led by ASP Dhilpaul, and homicide officers.
