Cumana top TSTT North Coast sports
While TSTT and the primary schools of the north coast have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship, this was the first year that the games were staged under the auspices of the TSTT Foundation.
The Games are open to students of the North Eastern Education District and allow them to compete in track and field events to earn a place in North-East Zonal finals track and field meet and eventually the National Primary Schools sports meet.
TSTT’s support includes athletic equipment and gear to improve the quality of training available for students. The North-East area is very rural and TSTT’s support helps enable young athletes to develop their potential in any track and field discipline.
Graeme Suite, Corporate Communications Officer addressed the gathering which included Schools Supervisor III Althea Pernell and Councillor Terry Rondon.
“In this our 23rd year of support for these exciting games, we once again offer sport as a positive influence for our young people, as expressed in this year’s theme, “Celebrating sport— a non-violent alternative,” Suite said.
“Violence may seem a phenomenon far removed from the tranquil surroundings of Toco but its tentacles stretch further and further in this shrinking world. Through these Games, TSTT seeks to uplift the youngsters by presenting opportunities for promising athletes, “ he said.
“Indeed, I am told by Schools Supervisor I, Mr Peter Thomas, that some past participants in these TSTT North Coast Primary School Games have gone on to win athletics scholarships to universities abroad — realising TSTT’s dream for them and for all young people,” Suite said.
Over 400 students participated and Cumana SDA Primary School emerged the champions.
