UTC executive’s son seriously injured in crash

The 25-year-old son of Unit Trust Corporation Executive Director Clary Benn and a 24-year-old police constable attached to the Chaguanas Police Station, suffered serious injuries when the car driven by Benn ran off the road in the vicinity of the Munroe Road Flyover early yesterday.

Virgil Benn, 25, of Enterprise and PC Kevin John, 24, the Assistant Chief Clerk at the Chaguanas Police Station, were travelling in a vehicle driven by Benn around 3.15 am. Reports revealed that Benn was driving south along the Uriah Butler Highway when, on reaching in the vicinity of the Munroe Road Flyover, the driver of a car swerved in front of Benn’s vehicle. This caused him to lose control of his vehicle which ran off the road. The vehicle ended up on its roof on the northbound lane.

Both Benn and John were trapped in the vehicle. They were pulled out of the mangled wreck by other motorists who took them to the Chaguanas Health Centre. The two were transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. The car was towed to the Chaguanas Police Station. Reports revealed that the two underwent emergency surgery yesterday and were listed in unsatisfactory condition. Efforts were being made yesterday by relatives of Benn to move him to a private medical institution. PC John was visited at hospital by senior officers of Central Division. Cpl Remy of the Chaguanas Police Station is investigating.
