Mother turns in fugitive son

THE MOTHER and friends of a 27-year-old Diego Martin man who was wanted on ten outstanding warrants handed him over to the police yesterday after getting assurances from the lawmen that he would not be shot. The fugitive, who was the focus of a dramatic five-hour manhunt in La Puerta, Diego Martin, on Saturday, was handed over to officers from the Court and Process Department and the warrants were served on him. He is expected to appear in court today. A manhunt involving members of several police branches including the Court and Process Branch, the Western Division CID, Task Force and Charge Room, the Helicopter, Canine and Guard and Emergency Divisions and several other departments, failed to capture the suspect.

The hunt was launched after he allegedly broke a domestic violence order. It is alleged that he armed himself with a gun and threatened his common-law wife, firing two shots in the process. According to police reports, two Sundays ago he visited the same house and was cautioned by the police but not arrested. He returned later that evening and was beaten unconscious by villagers. After Saturday’s manhunt, relatives and friends of the fugitive expressed concern that with the heavy police presence he would be killed if they found him. An agreement was reached and on late Saturday night his mother and friends went into the La Puerta hills where they met the wanted man and escorted him to the Four Roads Police Station where he was handed over to the Court and Process officers. When contacted yesterday, police officers confirmed that they had made an agreement with the family of the terminally ill man for him to give himself up. Visiting the scene were Snr Supt Drakes, Supt Gonzales, ASP Ferguson, Sgt Ramsoobhag, Cpl Parsonlal, PCs Lyndon, Burnett, Warner, Thompson, McMillan and Clarke. The man has several outstanding warrants for rape, shooting with intent and robbery.
